In collaboration with local eye doctor and mama Sarah Hutchens of The Vision Development Centre we have curated the perfect mix of toys to aid in healthy eye development.
Dr. Hutchens tells us “Babies are unable to distinguish colors until they are ~3-4 months old! This is why I highly recommend black and white targets in the early days. Then we want to move to brightly colored toys, small lights and targets. While pastels are oh so pretty, more vibrant primary colors will be much easier for baby to see!
Babies also love to look at faces; set them up in front of this mirror and let them gaze away at their beautiful self! Mirrors are also a great way for babe to practice visual tracking.
In the first few months, babies can actually only see about 8-12" away from their face - perfect to see mom or dad holding them.
One final tip: the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the first eye exam between the ages of 6-9 months!”
